Education – Year 2 Summary

 My Year 2 Summary :

I found Year 2 to be more educational and less stressful than year 1. I finally realized that I am as smart, if not smarter, than the other people in my class. I, also, finally came to grips that I could pass all my classes and understand the material and partially retain it.  Perhaps, I found the classes more entertaining also. Maybe it was that I knew I was finally going home after some time so I saw a light at the end of the tunnel.

The main thing to stress is spend time on Pathology and Pharmacology. Read Goljan Pathology as much as you can even if your class does not use this book. Pick a Pharm book and start learning. In hindsight, I wish I would have learned both the drug name and trade name together because at the hospital, most people use the trade name. For Step 1 purposes, you only need to know the drug name.

Understanding these two classes well is enough to allow you  to succeed in your Internal Medicine rotations.

As much as I found Microbiology interesting in class, I have not had much use for it so far in my clinicals. The lab culture microbology reports not only tell you what bug there is, but also tells you which drugs it is sensitive and resistant to.  If there are any issues, an Infectious Disease specialist is consulted for doses and for drug of choice recommendations.
